Happy Pride Week!!
We are in the middle of Calgary’s 25th annual pride week. Calgary pride week is a time for celebration and a time to raise awareness around the challenges faced by the LGBTQ community in hopes of ending discrimination against gender identity and sexual orientation.

The first pride event in Calgary was held in 1990 and was far from a celebration. It was recorded that participants wore paper bags over their heads both out of fear of being identified and as a protest against the stigma that keeps LGBTQ people from being their true selves.
Fast forward to today, the tone has certainly changed. There is a growing number of local organizations sponsoring events and political figures showing their genuine support. Did you know Mayor Naheed Nenshi made history as the first mayor to act as the grand marshal for the Pride Parade?
This weekend is a celebration of acceptance and respect. It’s a time to educate ourselves and gain the understanding that we are all unique. Each of us needs to take the time to find out what we can do to move beyond tolerance to embracing diversity.
At the end of the day we’re all people, no one is the same. Shouldn’t we celebrate our differences every day?
