When the alarm goes off, do you jump up and look forward to getting your day started or do you press the snooze button, dreading the idea of work? This simple dilemma in the morning is a big sign of what your day will bring. Do you love or hate your job?

There are several factors that predict employee retention. What makes employees decide whether to stay or leave a job?

Hate your job

No vision

Do you feel like you don’t quite fit in your company? Do you ever doubt the vision of the company? If you are feeling disconnected, it might not be the right fit. Every company should have a vision, and they should be able to sell you on that vision.

No fun

In every company, the ultimate goal is to attract, engage and keep top talent. If you are stuck behind a desk for 8 hours doing work that does not appeal to you, you can quickly become disengaged. Remember that everyone thrives in a different type of role. Some people love repetitive tasks and others would rather jump off a cliff before dealing with math. It’s your job to figure out what works best for you and to find a career that will keep you engaged.

Bad relationships

You have heard that “people quit their boss, not their job.” This is the biggest reason people quit their job. Poor relationships and lack of solid leadership is damaging to career satisfaction.

Love Your job

Communication

Make sure that your employees feel like they are one with the company. The best way to improve retention is to communicate current and relevant news to employees.

Appreciation

Receiving praise for a job well done can go a long way in employee retention. Whether as an individual or as a group, recognition for a job well done can boost the mood of any office and team.

Motivation

There are 2 types of motivation, extrinsic and intrinsic. Extrinsic motivators include money, bonuses, and career advancements. Extrinsic motivators for hard work inspire employees to continue to perform. This is the intrinsic, internal motivation to work hard. Employees want rewards on both fronts. We want to do a good job and get rewarded for a job well done.

As an employee, keep these points in mind while transitioning jobs. This will help you make solid decisions that will give you better job satisfaction in the long run. Remember that your attitude can often make a big difference so put a smile on to boost your day – and your colleagues’!

Employers should keep their best talent happy and make employee retention their top focus every day. Staff are not just looking for cash. They want you to be relatable and someone they can rely on every day. Your people are your best asset and you can’t afford to lose them!
